GAUGE 1 (10mm / 1:32 ) TRADERS LIST.

This list is placed on the web as a thank you to those Traders who have contributed towards helping me setting up my Gauge 1, 2 rail electric, GWR period - 1900 - 1925 - dioramic layout DENBURY . www.gauge1layout.com
As such the old Great Western Railway is predominant and no traders will have been contacted by me if they only specialise in the other pre grouping railway Companies or modern image, nor will you find any reference to steam, engineering, modern electronic control systems or radio control.
When dealing with traders in Gauge 1 you must be clear as to the precise SCALE of the items in question as their is a considerable difference in many items - it is best to decide which scale you opt for at the start and stick to it (see below)- the only area where you can get away with mixing the scales is in the scenery department, see pics of DENBURY.
SCALE:
I am indebted to John Barrett of Barrett Engineering for the following clear explanation of this problem:
Before buying even one piece of stock for the layout a decision has to be made as to which scale the layout will be built to and there are TWO scales to consider and you are advised to read this very carefully before embarking into Gauge 1:-
a). The accepted ENGLISH one is expressed as 10mm to the foot. Correctly it should be referred to as 1:30.5.
b). The INTERNATIONAL one is expressed as 9.525 mm to the foot. Correctly it should be referred to as 1:32nd.
This mainly refers to BODY SIZE and most English suppliers and manufacturers produce most items to 10mm but it pays to check if the item is from Europe or the USA or whether the item is a specialist brass kit, As all or any of these may be 1:32nd scale.
WHEEL STANDARDS:- much more important and the 3 choices are:-
Gauge 1 COARSE: this is applied to vintage tinplate, early hand built models and today's LGB (tm) and 'G' scale models, to run on oversize 'toy like' track.
Gauge 1 STANDARD. (GIS).:- used by the vast majority of Gauge 1 modellers, both in the UK and overseas. Commercially it is 'Asters' standard. It uses 40 mm back to back measurement, 6mm tyre and flange width and the majority of commercially produced track is to this standard.
Gauge 1 FINE .(GIF):- using 42 mm back to back measurement with slightly reduced tyre and flange width. Although I cannot personally comment on this, it is not generally recommended for outdoor layouts and has been reported as incurring some unreliable operation on standard commercial point work. (I did find one set of loco wheels with a 5mm tread/flange width and these gave trouble on the Markway point work and I had them replaced with a set of (GIS) ones from Walsall Models).
My personal choice for DENBURY was 10 mm scale for everything involving stock, buildings, line side etc but some of the required figures and line side items may only be available in 1:32nd so will be carefully blended in.
My adopted wheel standard for DENBURY throughout is 40 mm back to back (GIS) using insulated wheel sets.

TRADERS.
This is by no means a full comprehensive list of Gauge 1 suppliers or traders and is not a Trade Directory as such but anyone who wishes to be added to the list or have any changes made to existing information on the site then please contact me. I apologise if any of the information supplied is slightly out of date as in some cases it was 4 or 5 years ago that I started to compile the list.
As so little is available commercially for the Gauge 1 modeller, the sourcing of all items and material has been an ongoing task for me and to save time for other modellers, who may wish to undertake modelling in this truly impressive scale and if you have ever modelled in either 4mm or 7mm before this site is meant to be a means of encouraging you to think seriously about Gauge 1(10mm).
For instance some of the smaller traders only advertise their products in the very selective small circulation newsletters etc, the sources I have found to be useful to me I have listed by mail address only in the categories section and any current website E Mail address or Tel No if known.
Where applicable I have segregated 1:30.5 - 1:32 and 1:35 items but I have not put in any prices or costs as these would vary with time etc.
I feel initial contact is best made by a letter, unless done directly at any Model Railway show

I am using Hammant and Morgan but these are no longer available new but can be hunted down by advertising. There are other alternatives used in the smaller scales but I have had no experience of whether these would be suitable for Gauge 1 and am therefore not in a position to recommend any specific items.
